For the last hundred years the average lifespan has increase thanks to medical knowledge advances. This additional knowledge has helped people understand and make better choices for their dietary needs. Meat groups provide a vast majority of traditional protein and fat in any diet. When this has to be excluded, legumes are the best go to source. Nuts, peas, beans, and lentils are part of the legume family.

Burgers, milk and many other bean based items have come a great distance in flavor and choice availability. Over the last fifty years, the alternative choices for burgers and milk products have improved a lot as both the popularity and need has increased. Restaurants have either adjusted their menus or added healthy choices for vegetarian and vegan friendly choices. It is not longer just a fad. In many cases it is a dietary requirement and this has pushed the meal preparation industry to improve the flavor choices to attract for customers.

Canned and fresh choices abound. People who are great cooks at home are often buying fresh and dried products. Those that lack the skills or do not have the time for full meal preparation often trend towards canned or frozen versions. Fresh products are usually considered the healthiest choice if prepared properly. However, the prepackaged versions have improved their vitamin inclusions in order to satisfy a more aware populace.

Some people choose to avoid meat based products. Some people are forced to avoid them by dietary requirements. Regardless of the reason, the popularity of alternative protein sources has increased incredibly over the last century with no foreseeable let up in sight.
