How To Engage Children With Fun Social Studies Lessons

How To Engage Children With Fun Social Studies Lessons

Though state standards are important in any school district, there are other ways to choose what you will teach. Even if you are homeschooling, most follow those standards. There are important things to consider beside them, however, for teaching fun social studies lessons. Availing yourself of these other methods can make learning social studies fun.

Getting a student interested in learning about the subject is the main thing about beginning to plan lessons. Most young children are very interested in the world around, and love exploring it. Anything currently happening is of interest to them, so lessons are best planned around these events.

One aspect of planning lessons that are fun for students is to plan those about things you are passionate about. Incorporate that subject into any social studies activities, for example let read-aloud activities focus on the subject you love, or mini units that teach a history technique using a subject that excites you. Students will catch onto your fascination with the subject and will also get excited about it. This may make the difference in a child that hates history and one that loves it.

Though there are state standards to follow, but you don't have to follow a textbook that may be very boring. You can engage your students with lessons designed by you, ones that will also be exciting to you. Anything that the teacher is excited about, the student will also be interested in learning. This makes the lesson appeal to both.

The whole idea is to let the student discover history with the teacher, rather than being taught history by the teacher. Researching and writing is one way to discover. Give them three scenarios and have them discuss and decide on which one they would decide. Try to encourage agreement in the whole group, teaching the correct way to give and take in making decisions. Then have them write about their decision.

Taking the details of a historical event and having them decide what they would do helps with interest as well. Don't reveal the event, but introduce the details surrounding it. Have the write or tell about what they would do under those circumstances. Hopefully they will come up with what the event is, or if not, tell them what actually happened and see how close to that they come.

Children learn with different styles, but they enjoy visual input more than any other. As they develop writing and language skills, visual learning helps them. To start a new unit or concept, a large visual image will gain their interest. You can do search on the internet for images that will interest them about the subject. Present the images and have them make inferences about what is happening and the time or period. Not only does this develop social studies concepts, but it also builds the ability to make inferences.

Keep the images very large, visible to all in the classroom, using a projector and screen, and very colorful so as to excite the student's interest. Keep the images for both pre- and post- activities. Have them keep a record of their inferences, then compare it to what they learned. Have them write or tell how they were different and what made them decide what really happened.
