Robert Jain: How To Keep Your Social Security Number Safe

by Jason McDonald

To say that your social security number bears importance would be an understatement. In fact, it's due to this level of importance that the likes of Robert Jain recommend that you keep your SSN safe. While safety goes a long way, some practices are more worthwhile than others. Take the following steps toward social security number safety so that every facet of your life, finances included, remain secure.

When it comes to social security number safety, keeping it to yourself is a great place to begin. In other words, don't freely give it out, even to family members. You may never know when such information will become lost and fall into the wrong hands. Only provide it to those that absolutely require it. According to names such as Bob Jain, such parties include doctors and banks, as they are likely to require such information before moving forward.

You should also be mindful of the businesses that, despite what they say they require, may not need your social security number at all. Of course, you have to be careful about leveraging this, as there are many businesses that absolutely require the SSNs from potential clients. Otherwise, they may be denied service, which can create a slew of other problems. You should know who has access to your number, but not to the point where it inhibits other areas of service.

Another way to keep your social security number safe is to monitor your billing statements. For example, if you look at one of your statements and see a payment that you don't remember making, it's in your best interest to contact your bank. By doing so, you'll be able to see if this was an instance of irregular activity that could have been tied to your SSN. Don't hesitate to contact your bank in this instance, as it will provide the help you need.

Finally, you should ask about privacy policies. For instance, if you go to the doctor and fill out a form that requires your social security number, ask about their policy. Inquire about why the information is required and how it will be used. Having such information at your disposal will make you more inclined to provide it in the future. More importantly, it will allow you to keep your SSN more secure.
