Exploring The Connection Between Social Work And Politics
by Douglas Walker
When it comes to the field of sociology and political interests, the two are often vastly different. While this is the case, those training to work on electoral campaigns is one area in which this is not the case. For, those whom can lead others with regards to social work and politics are often sought after by a number of partisan and nonpartisan campaigns.
In most cases, these students have shown an interest in political aspirations while still being involved in the area of social justice. As a result, there are many students whom are not only committed to these areas, some have also shown an interest in running for office. Whereas, there are also others whom focus strictly on one area or the other.
Individuals running for elected positions at the local, state and national level often have differing beliefs and platforms. In some cases, a candidate will share in the majority of beliefs and platforms of a specific party. In others, the individual may run as an independent or third party depending on which best suits the interests of the candidate. As such, regardless of candidates or whom wins or loses, there is most likely going to be some aspect of political change in the future.
While training is often available for those pursuing an elected position by a local election board or other organization, this is not always the case. Most students who have studied political science know the importance of an open and honest campaign. At the same time, these individuals may still want to attend any local training being offered in relation to campaigning, the election board and voter fraud. For, studies have shown that those attending such classes often have a better chance of becoming an elected official.
Once these individuals start working, many can be found working on campaigns, running for office or working as speech writers. At which time, many begin to engage with elected officials in order to gain as much information as possible about upcoming elections and candidates. Whereas, these practices also provide for working experience if an individual still has political aspirations.
For students, those working towards becoming a social worker may also want to consider enrolling in some political science courses. For, while the local training is an option, the more educated and informed a candidate or anyone looking to work on a campaign, the better. While this is the case, it is important to remember to put political party and beliefs aside when working with clients as a licensed social worker.
Some politicians and students often prefer to acquire an advocate to spread the word about a campaign. While this is the case, unless the campaign manager and candidates are also visible, it can often be difficult to gain new voters. Also, if not careful, an advocate can often promote beliefs and personal agendas rather than those of the campaign, sometimes without intention.
One study involving existing interest in politics looked at subjects working in the area. Whereas, a totally different study focused on students pursuing degrees in political science and sociology. Ultimately, the research showed that in all cases, those majoring in sociology often became more interested in politics than those in other focus groups.
