Creating a home bbq pit is a landscape project that can test a lot of people when they try to do it themselves but it is possible when you have the correct materials and tools providing of course that you have the knowledge.
The tools which you will need to be able to correctly do the jobs will be gravel, a shovel, water, hand lamp, morter mix, grill top cinder braces, trowel, metal braces and bricks. All of these items are easy to obtain if you do not have them already as they can all be purchased from the local hardware store or home improvements store.
There is a lot of planning that will need to be done and the first task is to decide where the pit is going to be placed as you will want to out it where you will be able to maximise its use. Bear in mind the location of it in terms of the house as you will not the smoke from the BBQ going into the house as this will make everything smelly.
Another aspect that is very important is what size you are going to make it as you do not want to make it too big as this will mean that you will have not space in the garden for relaxing. You will need to get a happy medium between it being too small and it being too big so try to think about it practically and get an image of how it is going to look. Make sure that you get it correct from the start as you will not want to move it once you have started.
Once you have completed all of the planning then the you will need to next decide which shape you want it to be. You can have a BBQ pit which is ether square or rectangular.
The shape that you opt for will really be a case of personal preference and what would work best for your needs. You will need to dig into the ground for at least eight inches and about fifty inches around the perimeter. Clear the area and measure it correctly and then level off the surface.
The next task that you will need to do is to lay the gravel so that it is about two inches in thickness and spread a layer or mortar over the top of the gravel so that it extends a couple of inches in from the edges. Use a trowel to put the combined mortar and water in the pit.
Smooth the area over whilst the mortar is still damp. Continue this process until you have built the pit up to the height which you require. A lot of the design work is really mainly down to your preferences.
