How To Become A Behavior Intervention Specialist And What To Expect

by Catherine Cook

Children love being in school because they are under the care of loving teachers and they get to interact with new friends. It is not that easy for those with special needs or developmental disorders like autism and ADD or attention deficit disorder. Their lives are characterized by constant conflict with teachers and mockery from fellow pupils. As a behavior intervention specialist, you will be expected to normalize the situation.

Interventionists are also referred to as behavior analysts. Most of the time will be spent with children experiencing developmental challenges. Your role is to help them develop social skills, work on their learning ability in school and reduce or eliminate negative or disruptive tendencies that affect their ability to learn. Some of the places you work from include government institutions, clinics and schools.

An analyst is required to pay personalized attention to a client or child. Most of these children range between five and twenty one years. They have special social and academic needs which demands personalized attention. Some have anger issues such that it is impossible for them to make or keep friends. Some show signs of Aspergers, a condition associated with excessive sensitivity.

The unique challenges and condition of each client demands individualized attention. The plan developed by an analyst must reflect the unique challenges so that such a student can, for instance, find it easier to study. It is necessary to have a wider view of the situation since such patients or clients affect the ability of those in their surrounding to live a normal life. As a specialist, it requires dedication, passion and readiness to work in such an environment.

Behavioral analysis involves collaboration between all persons involved in the day-to-day life of the child. The approach developed should not make any participant in the life of a child or client to feel inadequate. This means explaining to teachers, parents, administrators, etc in a way that makes them collaborators in finding a solution. As an analyst, you must be good at teamwork, personal relations and communication.

Regular meetings form part of your work. The meetings bring together school psychologists, psychiatrists and administrators. The idea is to share views on the best intervention measures towards a particular case. You will meet with parents or guardians in an attempt to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the child and thus find a solution. You are required to take the lead in all these meetings.

There is increased interest in this field. Upon completion of your degree in a related field, certification is required to allow registration by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The most competitive persons are those who have pursued the course to masters level. Other areas where these specialists are employed include group homes, early intervention centers and residential treatment centers. You may also be engaged in alcohol, drugs and gambling counseling in adults.

As a behavior specialist you can expect a salary averaging 68,780dollars in a year. The actual figure depends on the state you are based, duties assigned, education experience and work environment, among other factors. A lot of observation and team work is required to succeed as an analyst. You must also be resilient when handling the stubborn children and personalities.
