How To Plan A Kayak Harpeth River Trip

How To Plan A Kayak Harpeth River Trip

by Brian Price

Many will say that the great outdoor experience cannot be complete unless we do what the early explorers did, and that is do some of it in a kayak or a canoe. So if you are planning something like a kayak Harpeth River excursion, then it is something that will make you access places that are still untouched by man. Do read on so as to make the most of your planned trip.

A checklist is what will be needed to help you get started and get you going. This list will not only contain a list of what you need to bring but also what you may need to do to prepare you mentally for this trip. Never underestimate the power of a very simple checklist and what it can do.

First and foremost on your list will be where to go. Of course you have already decided on a kayak trip via the Harpeth River in the state of Tennessee. The Harpeth is should be noted is one of the major tributaries to the Cumberland and Ohio Rivers, and both of these rivers together make up the Mississippi Watershed. Since you have basically chosen a river, you should study it well.

Identify the locations of where the whitewater areas on the Harpeth are. A majority will be located in the Little Harpeth, a tributary of this waterway. Always stay away from these whitewater areas and only tackle them if you are already an experienced kayaker. Do not just go to these places just for the heck of it, as it can be dangerous.

The Harpeth is a river that has great smooth sailing in general although it will meander quite a bit. Meandering means basically that it will twist and turn quite a bit throughout its course. These turns will all have differing speeds and currents and so it is best to ask about them and study them prior to your journey.

The acquisition of a good guide is definitely something that you should put on your list. Get a seasoned guide who has impeccable safety records. This will be a bit more expensive but you can never put a price on safety. Ask on local forums and such for the best guide around. Also interview your prospective guides thoroughly.

Remember to gear up properly by asking experienced kayakers what to buy. If you are a first time it is very easy to go overboard and spend a lot, so do shop prudently. An advantage is that you can always buy everything online nowadays so you do not have to do a lot of running around. Always be prudent in spending your money.

And before you do go, sit down with your group and have a long discussion on what you hope to accomplish, do or enjoy. Discuss also how long you want the trip to be, the shorter the better, for these kind of trips can be exhausting. A two to three day trip should suffice for you.
