Paraguay Flag History Today

Paraguay Flag History Today

by Fred Ginson

Indians speaking Guaraníâ€"the most common language in Paraguay today, after Spanishâ€"were the country's first inhabitants. In 1526 and again in 1529, Sebastian Cabot explored Paraguay when he sailed up the Paraná and Paraguay rivers.

Isolated from much of the rest of Spanish-dominated South America, Paraguay developed a unique flag design. The earliest known emblem (c. 1812) of local independence was based on the Spanish flag; it had red-yellow-blue stripes with a coat of arms.

The flag of Paraguay consists of three horizontal stripes - the top stripe is red, the middle one white, and the bottom stripe is blue. In the middle of the Paraguay flag and white stripe, there is an emblem. The front of the flag has the country's state coat of arms on it and the back has the country's Treasury Seal. The state arms on the front consist of a five-pointed yellow star on a blue disc. Surrounding the star is an olive branch and a palm branch.

The flag of Paraguay has three horizontal bands of equal width in red, white, and blue from to bottom. Unlike any other national flag, the flag of Paraguay is unique in that the front (obverse) of the flag of Paraguay is different from the back (reverse). On the front of the flag, the national coat of arms is placed in the center of the white stripe. Centered on the back of the flag is the seal of the national treasury.

The treasury seal features a lion sitting beneath a liberty cap mounted on a staff; it is framed by the national motto, “Paz y justicia” (“Peace and justice”). Although the same basic design has been in use since 1842, there have been many modifications in the artistic rendition of the coat of arms and treasury seal.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Papua New Guinea flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Papua New Guinean flag for the future.
